Travel Post: The Bahamas

IMG_6342

We took off to the heat of The Bahamas this past long weekend. A long overdue indulgence of sun, sand and sea. We settled in at The Cove at the Atlantis, an ultra luxurious resort perched directly seaside and surrounded with palms and pools.

Long early morning walks along the beach with coffee followed by lazy river rides and lazier lunches. We loved how spacious the resort felt, I love my elbow room and this place definitely delivered. Wandering along the many under ground aquarium tunnels, we were most often alone and loved every peaceful minute. We spent many hours taking in the breathtaking aquatic beauty.

Extended dinners over champagne at both Nobu and 77 West overlooking a gorgeous yacht-filled harbour at sunset, were memories I won’t soon forget.

Plunging feet first to my death on near vertical water slides in the enormous water park was an experience I most definitely could have done without (the things you do for the guy you love…I recommend vodka to ease the piercing anxiety of such activities). However the luscious pools and hidden water fall corners were thoroughly enjoyed.

I only regret not booking myself into the resort spa Mandara, for a treatment or two…walking past the sweet aroma and calm atmosphere was intoxicating….next time.

We spent our last day poolside at The Cain club, the fabulous adult only pool bordered by plush day beds, loungers, a DJ and a smattering of private cabanas and high roller tables . A very relaxing day of full sun, great music, many glasses of champagne delivered by the lovely resort staff and some of the best people watching I’ve seen in awhile.

We have a few other destinations on our travel bucket list, but returning to The Cove to bob in the shallow aqua ocean is most certainly in the plan.

Ode to Summer.

summerroundup

With tomorrow being September 1st, a literal and symbolic end of summer,  I thought it most appropriate to finish off this month with a post rounding up most of my summer looks.

I think for me, this was a summer of little sundresses, pencil skirts, boyfriend denim, strappy heels, and many a vintage handbag.

Every season I try to figure out what is the backbone piece, that one garment that will bring my wardrobe together and make dressing easy and fun: I think this summer it was pencil-length dresses and skirts paired with strappy heels. My favourite fitted pieces. I’m excited to see about transitioning some of those ideas and translating them for fall.

And even though September will be just as hot or hotter than August, I am officially curating my wardrobe for fall, and the inevitable chill it brings….I actually spent time today putting a few summer pieces in storage…*sigh*…

To the end of summer…cheers;)

Calvin Klein Jeans & The Leather Skirt.

Happy Tuesday Everyone! What can I say? One more day closer to Friday! I don’t know about you, but once August hits I try to enjoy every last minute of the summer days that are left. The more time I can spend on a patio, or at the beach, the happier I am. Lord knows, before long my summer skirts and dresses will be tucked away again for a long hibernation…

I recently picked up this cool Calvin Klein Jeans chambray shirt along my travels. As soon as I saw the worn-in label inside, I knew it was some 90’s gold. Its funny, when I was a teenager growing up in love with fashion, Calvin Klein was (and still is!) major designer royalty. Its interesting to see the iconic brand making the editorial pages again with a clear revival of 90’s CK style: think Kate the Great in her Calvins. When I was a teenager I was lucky enough to inherit my older (obviously cooler) cousins Calvin Klein Jeans hand-me-downs (those iconic T-shirts and sweatshirts that the cool kids are wearing). It definitely took me back to pick up this 90’s throwback.

Gingham.

toronto style blogger gingham dress summer style 6

I feel the same way about gingham as I do about summer picnic’s with champagne; giddy and ready for more. Is gingham not the sweetest summer print? A little bit retro, a little bit classic, and in a dress like this, still fresh and sweet as ever. I love the details on this version, the back zipper runs the entire length of the dress. The oversized pockets give an almost apron-like feel to the shape; really bringing home that retro vibe.

I mentioned in my post The Wedding Guest: Cream & Stripes , that the dress I was wearing in that post was one of my very favourite cuts of all time. This dress is bang on point with that cut. Super fitted, hits just below the knee and tapered in at the waist: a gorgeous feminine cut. I mean really, this dress was made for a champagne picnic.

Cherry Blossoms

This adorable cherry blossom print dress was an end-of-summer sale find from H&M a little while back. I think I paid about $15 dollars for it at the time, its been a summer wardrobe staple ever since. Which reminds me, major end-of-summer sales are happening now…I know what I’m doing this weekend…

Knot.

I’m finding it hard to believe today is August 1st…where does the time go!? Even though the heat and humidity is still on an incline here in Toronto, I can’t  help but feel that summer is edging ever closer to an end…even in August Vogue and on my Pinterest feed, fall styles are starting to pop up here and there. I will admit, I do get really excited to start thinking about styling my wardrobe for fall, its just a little early yet for me.

Any opportunity to style a t-shirt into my look, makes me really happy. Whats easier, more laid-back and comfortable than a t-shirt? One of my favourite ways to instantly make a t-shirt look more interesting is to throw a knot into it. I prefer to keep the knot centred, either in the back or in the front, like I’ve done here. I love how the knot tapers the look at my waist, it makes for a very hourglass shape and adds interest to such a quintessentially simple piece.

The Wedding Guest: Cream & Stripes.

toronto style blogger wedding guest style vineyard wedding 1

This past weekend, TDF and I had the pleasure to attend the wedding of a longtime friend of TDF’s, in the beautiful Niagara Wine Country. The wedding took place at a serene Estate, surrounded by cornfield’s, grapevines and wild flowers.

This is the first time I have attended a wedding at a Vineyard Estate, and I have to say I was totally in love with everything about this wedding. The scene was so perfect. It was a a small, intimate wedding. The ceremony and reception took place on opposite sides of the same property. Once we were done witnessing the short and sweet “I-Do’s”, the guests were free to mosey over to this rustic open air barn, to the open bar, and enjoy the delicious appetizers being served around by the staff. After we enjoyed an outdoor buffet dinner, we spent the rest of the evening tearing up the dance floor…until they served us all late night stone-fired pizza, from the outdoor pizza oven…we departed, some very contented guests.

This may be my very favourite dress of all time. I’ve worn it to a couple of events before, (including a bridal shower last summer, and tooling around Las Vegas with flats), I just love the cut and length, the width of the straps, and the tapered affect of the matching belt. I wish I had ten of this exact dress in different colours and patterns. This dress honestly has legs for days, the amount I am able to incorporate it into my wardrobe. It also seems to work for just about any occasion, depending on how I choose to accessorize.

Speaking of accessories, I had chosen another pair of heels for this event, a pair of super-high stiletto’s. Lord was I happy to have brought these wedges as my ‘back-up’ option. There was a lot of traipsing across expansive lawns, and of course through the outskirts of cornfields (to get these shots). Wedges are a vineyard-wedding must.

I would also like to point out that Cheap Thrills + Haute Chic has undergone a name change. Welcome to the new blog, The Amber Edit

Heat Wave & The Blue Dress

toronto style blogger summer style blue sundress lace up sandals 5

What’s the answer to dressing when the temperature outside reaches level: Hellfire? Little light dresses, and hair swept up off the neck would be my best and final answer. Toronto has been in major humidity mode the last few days. It is crazy hot out over here. All I want to wear right now are light breezy dresses to keep cool in. The photo’s in this post don’t quite do the print on this dress justice. It’s the sweetest little daisy print, so feminine.

I have officially abandoned my hair dryer, straightener and curling iron. There really is no point trying to coax my hair into submission in this heat, so I let my hair dry naturally and get it off my neck. I’m kind of over the whole top-knot thing, what I’m rocking here is more of a double knot-chignon situation, with lots of whispy baby hairs; rolling with the natural texture of my hair. Easy-breezy.

Grand Bend.

toronto style blogger summer style denim skirt 1

I’ve been visiting Grand Bend every summer since I was a little girl. When I was a kid, I used to take camping vacations there with my family. Now, TDF and I make a trip together every summer.

Grand Bend is a little tiny beach town on the edge of Lake Huron. The town itself is basically one street long, with little cottage communities along each side. Down the main street you’ll find ice cream and burger shops that have been there since the 50’s and 60’s (See the Dairy Dip). We ate brunch every morning in the institution that is The Colonial Hotel Restaurant, which has been there since the 1940’s. Many of the existing buildings along the strip are about hundred years old or more. You can feel the beachy nostalgia as you stroll along…

Some of the most mesmerizing sunsets I’ve observed in my life were up in Grand Bend. They are a huge draw. It’s really amazing to see the tourists and the locals group down to the beach to witness it every night; assembled in collective, quiet awe.

We only had a few days there for this trip, so we made sure to indulge in all the great Grand Bend patios; Coco’s, The Growling Gator, Cheryl Ann, et al. We also love to stroll through all the little shops, which change over the years. I love that they all seem to be in the business of salt water taffy…a sugar rush in Grand Bend is made of assorted salt water taffy, margaritas, and a Dairy Dip Sundae (I highly recommend The Famous Turtle Sundae: gooey chocolate & caramel fudge drizzled over crunchy pecans and soft serve)… fuel for a little afternoon mini-putt.

Both of the skirts I’m wearing in this photo diary were major thrift/vintage finds. The denim version is actually a skort, which I love! The floral skirt is vintage. I take this skirt with me on every beach-related trip. With the bright, vivid colours, it just feels like I’m on vacation when I put it on. Plus I think it goes well with a patio and a margarita.
