Travel Post: The Bahamas

IMG_6342

We took off to the heat of The Bahamas this past long weekend. A long overdue indulgence of sun, sand and sea. We settled in at The Cove at the Atlantis, an ultra luxurious resort perched directly seaside and surrounded with palms and pools.

Long early morning walks along the beach with coffee followed by lazy river rides and lazier lunches. We loved how spacious the resort felt, I love my elbow room and this place definitely delivered. Wandering along the many under ground aquarium tunnels, we were most often alone and loved every peaceful minute. We spent many hours taking in the breathtaking aquatic beauty.

Extended dinners over champagne at both Nobu and 77 West overlooking a gorgeous yacht-filled harbour at sunset, were memories I won’t soon forget.

Plunging feet first to my death on near vertical water slides in the enormous water park was an experience I most definitely could have done without (the things you do for the guy you love…I recommend vodka to ease the piercing anxiety of such activities). However the luscious pools and hidden water fall corners were thoroughly enjoyed.

I only regret not booking myself into the resort spa Mandara, for a treatment or two…walking past the sweet aroma and calm atmosphere was intoxicating….next time.

We spent our last day poolside at The Cain club, the fabulous adult only pool bordered by plush day beds, loungers, a DJ and a smattering of private cabanas and high roller tables . A very relaxing day of full sun, great music, many glasses of champagne delivered by the lovely resort staff and some of the best people watching I’ve seen in awhile.

We have a few other destinations on our travel bucket list, but returning to The Cove to bob in the shallow aqua ocean is most certainly in the plan.

Silver| Sweater Dress

sweater dress toronto style blogger 10

Just a quick post on this busy Friday night. I’m currently running around like a crazy person, gearing up for what I call the ‘Thanksgiving Runaround’. Which is basically 48 hours of non-stop driving, to marathon visit with our loved ones…who are scattered everywhere, spanning from the Niagara region to the Halton Hills. Its wonderful, but its a ‘Runaround’…what’s the price point on helicopter rentals these days? Uber-Heli anyone?

On another note: I’m completely in love with this silvery vintage sweater dress I picked up recently. It’s actually sleeveless with a slight turtle neck collar. I love how the silver picks up the light; it has a very slinky affect. Sweater dresses are one of my favorite pieces to wear throughout the fall-winter season, they are so versatile and easy to dress up or down, or to layer with a great jacket or statement coat – like I’ve styled it here with my fav trench.

Wishing everyone a very happy Canadian Thanksgiving, wish us luck on our ‘Runaround’ – Thanksgiving outfit posts to follow.

Cheers,

xx. A

Summer Neutrals.

toronto style blogger summer neutrals fall style 2

I’m really feeling a neutral palette right now. Maybe I’m subconsciously prepping for the warm, earthy colours of fall. By the way, this is my new favourite bag. I picked it up while vintage shopping recently, instantly falling in love with the rich navy colour. I didn’t realize until I got it home that its lined inside in real suede: Surprise suede is the best suede.

The Wedding Guest: Cream & Stripes.

toronto style blogger wedding guest style vineyard wedding 1

This past weekend, TDF and I had the pleasure to attend the wedding of a longtime friend of TDF’s, in the beautiful Niagara Wine Country. The wedding took place at a serene Estate, surrounded by cornfield’s, grapevines and wild flowers.

This is the first time I have attended a wedding at a Vineyard Estate, and I have to say I was totally in love with everything about this wedding. The scene was so perfect. It was a a small, intimate wedding. The ceremony and reception took place on opposite sides of the same property. Once we were done witnessing the short and sweet “I-Do’s”, the guests were free to mosey over to this rustic open air barn, to the open bar, and enjoy the delicious appetizers being served around by the staff. After we enjoyed an outdoor buffet dinner, we spent the rest of the evening tearing up the dance floor…until they served us all late night stone-fired pizza, from the outdoor pizza oven…we departed, some very contented guests.

This may be my very favourite dress of all time. I’ve worn it to a couple of events before, (including a bridal shower last summer, and tooling around Las Vegas with flats), I just love the cut and length, the width of the straps, and the tapered affect of the matching belt. I wish I had ten of this exact dress in different colours and patterns. This dress honestly has legs for days, the amount I am able to incorporate it into my wardrobe. It also seems to work for just about any occasion, depending on how I choose to accessorize.

Speaking of accessories, I had chosen another pair of heels for this event, a pair of super-high stiletto’s. Lord was I happy to have brought these wedges as my ‘back-up’ option. There was a lot of traipsing across expansive lawns, and of course through the outskirts of cornfields (to get these shots). Wedges are a vineyard-wedding must.

I would also like to point out that Cheap Thrills + Haute Chic has undergone a name change. Welcome to the new blog, The Amber Edit

Heat Wave & The Blue Dress

toronto style blogger summer style blue sundress lace up sandals 5

What’s the answer to dressing when the temperature outside reaches level: Hellfire? Little light dresses, and hair swept up off the neck would be my best and final answer. Toronto has been in major humidity mode the last few days. It is crazy hot out over here. All I want to wear right now are light breezy dresses to keep cool in. The photo’s in this post don’t quite do the print on this dress justice. It’s the sweetest little daisy print, so feminine.

I have officially abandoned my hair dryer, straightener and curling iron. There really is no point trying to coax my hair into submission in this heat, so I let my hair dry naturally and get it off my neck. I’m kind of over the whole top-knot thing, what I’m rocking here is more of a double knot-chignon situation, with lots of whispy baby hairs; rolling with the natural texture of my hair. Easy-breezy.

Date Night & The Red Sundress.

toronto style blogger summer style red sundress 5

I’m a sucker for a little sundress. In my dreams, my ideal wardrobe is a mix of simple, streamlined, inter-mixable pieces; with subtle details and excellent construction…but throw me a little sundress and I’ll fall for it every time. Especially those of the uber-feminine-print variety. It really is those little sundresses in my closet that make summer dressing fun, sometimes you need to mix it up a bit.

I like throwing a new sundress into the mix the same way I like trying a new wine, or a new restaurant; frequently and without inhibition. Case in point; last Saturday. I finally carved out time for a date night out with my guy, TDF. Picking this little red sundress to wear was easy, but schedules in my house are unpredictable at best, so actually taking the time to pick a place, is something of a miracle. Making reservations is key, designating a set time to be somewhere is crucial. Leave it to late, and we run the risk of hitting hangry mode…which usually results in takeout on the couch (a slightly less glamorous date night…).

When I’m looking for a new restaurant to try, I love starting my search on OpenTable.com. It’s a huge database of local restaurants (in many cities!). It’s so easy to search through different types of cuisine, menu’s and my favourite; reviews! And as expected, there’s an APP for that. TDF is super picky at the best of times, so being able to show him what he’s in for ahead of time, makes picking a place we’ll both enjoy incredibly easy. I also love that when you book your reservation, OpenTable sends you a confirmation email, outlining time, place, address, nearest intersection, and most importantly; the parking situation (only important to TDF…and other motorists I suppose, but still…)

So last Saturday, my search led me to il Ponte, a fabulous little Italian restaurant in the Riverdale/Leslieville neighbourhood. It was such a beautiful evening, so we enjoyed their sunny patio. Italian food is without question my absolute favourite, and this place did not disappoint. We dined on succulent calamari, a perfect antipasto board of cheeses and savoury meats, with these little juicy peppers and olives. And a crispy thin crust pepperoni pizza, with the melty-est mozzarella…which is making me salivate as I write this….paired with a perfectly chilled glass of sauvignon blanc…okay three perfectly chilled glasses…

We shot these pic’s just before dinner, I love the colour and print on this sweet little sundress. I feel like the dress speaks for itself, no need for additional embellishment. Simple, sweet and perfect for date night.

Cheers! xx

Grey Halter Dress.

toronto style blogger summer style grey dress 5

I picked up this grey halter dress recently from Mendocino. Normally I shy away from halter style tops, however I love how easy this one is to wear. I feel like its a great summer basic that can be layered and paired in a myriad of ways, from heels to flat gladiator sandals. I have it paired with a leather jacket here but I also love it with a well cut boyfriend blazer, to elevate the look a bit.

The clutch I’m holding is from a great vintage shop downtown Toronto (I wish I could remember the name!). I love the blocked black and white patent leather. Almost all of the bags I feature here on the blog are vintage or thrifted, this one is definitely one of my fav’s.

Little French Skirt.

toronto style blogger summer style 5

I picked up this sweet little linen skirt the other day at my favourite thrift haunt. In truth, I went in, carried it around, tried it on, hummed and hawed… and left it at the store. I went home and could not stop thinking about it. I think I actually dreamt about it that night… Luckily, when I returned the next day it was still there waiting for me. Fully lined, made in France and fits like a dream. Some things are just meant to be.

Simple Stripes + Leather Skinnies.

style blog leather skinnies trench coat stripes style blog 1

Every Thursday is homemade pizza night at my house. Its our way of winding down from the week and easing into the weekend. I always have some fresh dough on hand, prepped ahead of time. I usually make a large batch, then throw some in the freezer for later. We find it weirdly relaxing to knead out dough and chop up toppings together. Throw in some music and wine; bonus points for a cheap date night. (full disclosure: I definitely wear a full-on apron while doing this…though I hope the affect its more Ulyana Sergeenko than it is Grandma…).

This week however, with my swimsuit wish list growing ever longer, I opted for a lighter choice. We still rolled out the usual thin crust amazingness for TDF, but for myself I attempted my first Cauliflower Crust Pizza. The results: Tastebud Heaven. I was sincerely surprised to find that a cauliflower could actually resemble the likeness of chewy, crispy dough! My google search produced this recipe as ‘the best cauliflower dough’, the blogger whose site I found it on was so enthusiastic about the results, I had to try it. This recipe did require extra prep time however; shredding an entire head of cauliflower florets by hand. Obviously a food processor has now made the wish list. I also subbed out dried herbs in place of fresh rosemary, which made for major flavour and aromatic satisfaction. I topped my baked Cauli-Dough with some chopped grilled chicken, kalamata olives, artichokes, some melty brie, then tossed on some fresh arugula when it came out of the oven. A delicious and light alternative to keep enjoying our pizza date night…while I add some more swimsuits to the wishlist…

Speaking of wish lists, now that spring has finally arrived, I can get serious about making some spring/summer additions to my wardrobe. I always like to look ahead a few months to see what events are on the spring/summer schedule (eg: weddings, girls wine weekend getaways…etc.). Then I compile wish lists of possible looks on my favourite online sites. I now consider myself a pro online shopper. Actually going to stores has now become painful. Lets face it, shopping at major mall/outlet destinations, usually requires an elbows out approach. I buy everything online…clothes, makeup, doggie winter booties… I like that I can sit with my possible purchases for awhile. Compiling a list then stepping away for a little bit before making a purchase allows for a very seamless editing process.

I always like to include a couple basic pieces on every shopping list. Being able to mix one simple piece a variety of ways is key to building a wearable wardrobe; like this striped t-shirt I am wearing in this post. An easy t-shirt like this will go from leather skinnies to boyfriend jeans, to this seasons sweet mini skirts all while maintaining stylistic integrity. Sometimes its the simplest piece that pulls a look together best…

Shady Lady.

styleblogstreetstylefashionwinterstyle

Sundays are for sleeping in, wearing p.j.’s all day, buttery croissants and a good book. It has been steadily snowing in Toronto for a couple days now, going outside is officially out of the question. My only interest today is staying cozy…and the comfort of the delicious pot roast I have slow cooking…

These sweet little “Shady Lady” Kate Spade mittens were a Christmas gift from my ever-stylish Aunt Gail. I had wanted to include a link below in SHOP THE POST. Not surprisingly, after much research, it appears they are sold out everywhere. I did however find this cheeky pair on Etsy…Mittens have attitude this winter, and I love it…

We shot this look just before heading to my Dad’s 60th surprise birthday party last weekend. All-black-everything is my go-to right now. On the weekend I wear it because its chic and uncomplicated…through the week I wear it to mourn the end of my weekend… If spring is slowly on the way (makes prayer hands), I have to wonder if color will come back into my wardrobe with it…
